How To Read This

What this result does not account for

  • A single month is volatile; trailing three-month figures are more reliable for trend.
  • Excludes one-off and usage revenue, which may be material to actual cash.
  • The quick ratio is undefined when there are no losses in the period.

In short: Opening MRR of $384,400 plus $36,580 of new and $14,200 of expansion, less $3,100 of contraction and $9,600 of churn, closes at $422,480 — net new MRR of $38,080, or 9.91% growth, at an MRR quick ratio of 4.00.

Formula

Net new MRR = New + Expansion + Reactivation − Contraction − Churn
Closing MRR = Opening MRR + Net new MRR
Quick ratio = (New + Expansion) ÷ (Churn + Contraction)

The five components are what management can act on. A net MRR figure on its own cannot distinguish a business winning heavily and leaking heavily from one doing neither.

Worked Example

  1. Start with the opening balance. $384,400 of recurring revenue already under contract at the start of the month.
  2. Add what was won. 118 new customers at $310 is $36,580, plus $14,200 of expansion from existing accounts — $50,780 of gross additions.
  3. Subtract what was lost. $9,600 of churn and $3,100 of contraction is $12,700 lost from revenue that already existed.
  4. Read the net movement. $38,080 of net new MRR takes the closing balance to $422,480 — growth of 9.91% in the month.
  5. Check the efficiency. $50,780 of gains against $12,700 of losses is a quick ratio of 4.00, the conventional threshold for efficient growth.

The quick ratio is the figure worth reporting alongside net new MRR, because the net number alone cannot distinguish two very different businesses. A company adding $50,780 and losing $12,700 nets $38,080. So does a company adding $138,080 and losing $100,000 — identical net growth, a quick ratio of 1.38, and a completely different set of problems. The second business is spending far more on acquisition to stand in the same place, and every dollar of its sales effort is being partly consumed replacing revenue it already had. At 4.00 this business is winning four dollars for every one it gives back, which is where growth compounds rather than merely continues.

Strengths & Limits Of This Model

Where this engine is strong

  • Reports the full five-component bridge rather than a single net figure.
  • Computes the quick ratio and states what each band means operationally.
  • Labels the annual figure as a run rate rather than earned revenue.

Where it stops

  • Cannot separate seasonal movement from structural change in one period.
  • Treats all new customers at a single average revenue figure.

Risk & accuracy notice. Annualising a strong month is the most common error in recurring revenue reporting. Growth rates fall as the base grows, so a run rate built on the best month of the year overstates the trajectory and is the figure most often challenged in diligence.

Practical Use Cases

Board reporting on recurring revenue

Report the full bridge, not the net figure. Directors cannot diagnose a growth problem from a single number that nets four opposing forces.

Deciding between sales spend and retention work

A quick ratio below 2 usually means retention pays better than pipeline. Size the leak with the Churn Rate Calculator.

Valuing expansion revenue correctly

Expansion carries no acquisition cost, making it the cheapest revenue available. Track it with the Retention Rate Calculator.

Converting a monthly figure to an annual view

Run rate is not revenue earned. Understand the distinction with the ARR Calculator.

Methodology & Editorial Standards

Monthly recurring revenue is built from five components rather than reported as a single balance, because only the components are actionable. New MRR comes from customers acquired in the period, expansion from existing customers increasing spend, and reactivation from previously churned customers returning; contraction is existing customers reducing spend without leaving, and churned MRR is revenue lost when customers depart entirely. The engine reports the full bridge from opening to closing balance, since a net figure cannot distinguish a business winning and losing heavily from one doing neither, and those two situations demand opposite responses. The MRR quick ratio, defined as gross additions divided by gross losses, is the standard efficiency measure, with 4.00 conventionally treated as the threshold for efficient growth; below 2.00 the majority of sales effort is consumed replacing revenue that already existed, which usually means retention work returns more than additional pipeline. The engine reports the annualised run rate but labels it explicitly as a run rate rather than revenue earned, because the two are routinely conflated and the distinction matters to lenders, auditors and acquirers. The engine implements the standard published formula for this calculation. Inputs are validated for domain and sign before evaluation, and any undefined case returns an em-dash rather than a spurious value.

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

MRR Calculator — 20 Expert FAQs

20 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.

What is MRR?

Monthly recurring revenue — the predictable subscription revenue contracted for a month. Here it closes at $422,480.

What is net new MRR?

New plus expansion plus reactivation, less contraction and churn. Here $50,780 added against $12,700 lost gives $38,080.

What is the MRR quick ratio?

Gross additions divided by gross losses — 4.00 here. Above 4.00 is generally treated as efficient growth.

Why report the bridge rather than the net figure?

Because $38,080 net could mean adding $50,780 and losing $12,700, or adding $138,080 and losing $100,000. Those need opposite responses.

What is the difference between contraction and churn?

Contraction is an existing customer spending less; churn is a customer leaving entirely. Both reduce MRR but signal different problems.

Should one-off fees be included in MRR?

No. Setup fees, professional services and usage overages are not recurring, and including them overstates the predictable base.

How do annual contracts fit into MRR?

Divide the annual value by twelve. The cash arrives up front but the recurring revenue is recognised monthly.

What is expansion MRR worth?

More than new MRR of the same size, because it carries no acquisition cost. Here it is 27.96% of gross additions.

Is a 9.91% monthly growth rate sustainable?

Rarely. It annualises to over 200%, which almost no business sustains as the base grows. Judge growth over a trailing quarter.

What is reactivation MRR?

Revenue from previously churned customers returning. It is tracked separately because it reflects win-back effectiveness rather than new demand.

How does MRR relate to ARR?

ARR is usually MRR multiplied by twelve. It is a run rate, not revenue earned, and the two should never be used interchangeably.

What quick ratio is concerning?

Below 2. At that level most of what sales wins is lost again, and additional pipeline spend produces very little net growth.

Does MRR include discounts?

Yes — record the net contracted amount. Recording list price and treating the discount separately inflates the base.

How should I handle a customer downgrade and upgrade in the same month?

Record both gross movements. Netting them within a customer hides the underlying volatility of the base.

Why is my MRR growing but cash flat?

Recurring revenue is recognised monthly while cash may arrive annually or in arrears. Growing MRR frequently consumes cash before producing it.

What is a healthy expansion share?

Mature businesses often see 20% to 40% of gross additions from expansion. Below 10% usually means pricing is not aligned to customer value.

Is this mrr calculator free to use?

Yes. It is free, requires no account, and has no usage limits. ApexConverter is funded by contextual advertising, never by selling user data.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The engine runs as Vanilla JavaScript inside your browser under our Zero-Server Client-Side Execution model. Your figures are computed locally and are never transmitted, logged, or stored.

How accurate is this calculator?

It applies the standard closed-form formula in IEEE-754 double precision, rounding only at the display layer. The engine is reconciled against an independent reference implementation before release.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The interface is mobile-first with numeric keypad hints and is tested down to a 320-pixel viewport with no horizontal scrolling.
