What this result does not account for

  • Single-period measurement cannot separate early-life churn from long-run attrition; that requires cohort analysis.
  • Monthly rates on a small base are volatile — a handful of accounts can swing the figure by a full point.
  • Opening-base convention excludes customers won and lost within the same period.

In short: Losing 43 of 1,240 customers is 3.47% monthly churn — 34.53% a year when compounded, not the 41.61% a naive twelve-times multiplication reports. Revenue churn of 2.50% shows the accounts leaving are only 72.02% of average size.

Formula

Logo churn = Customers lost ÷ Customers at start
Annualised = 1 − (1 − monthly churn)12 (not ×12)
Gross revenue churn = MRR lost ÷ Starting MRR
Net revenue churn = (Churned + Downgrades − Expansion) ÷ Starting MRR

Multiplying monthly churn by twelve is wrong because a customer who has already left cannot leave again. The base shrinks each month, so the correct annualisation compounds the survival rate.

Worked Example

  1. Count logos first. 43 lost from an opening base of 1,240 is 3.47% monthly. Use the opening base, never the closing base, and never a mid-period average.
  2. Annualise by compounding. 1 − (1 − 3.47%)¹² is 34.53%. The naive 41.61% overstates the annual loss by 7.09 percentage points because it lets the same customers churn twice.
  3. Measure the money separately. $9,600 lost from $384,400 of MRR is 2.50% gross revenue churn — materially lower than the 3.47% logo figure.
  4. Compare the two rates. Logo churn above revenue churn means the accounts leaving are smaller than average: $223.26 against a $310.00 book average, or 72.02% of typical size.
  5. Net off expansion. Add $3,100 of downgrades and subtract $14,200 of expansion and net revenue churn turns negative at −0.39% — the base grew despite losing 43 logos.

Which direction the two rates diverge in matters enormously. Logo churn above revenue churn, the case here, means small accounts are leaving — unpleasant, often a self-serve onboarding problem, but survivable. Revenue churn above logo churn is the dangerous inversion: it means large accounts are leaving, revenue concentration among the survivors is rising, and a single further departure can move the whole quarter. A dashboard showing only one of the two rates cannot distinguish between these situations, which is why both belong in a board pack.

Strengths & Limits Of This Model

Where this engine is strong

  • Reports logo churn and revenue churn side by side so neither can mislead alone.
  • Annualises by compounding, correcting the most common churn arithmetic error.
  • Diagnoses whether departures skew large or small using average account size.

Where it stops

  • Not a cohort tool, so it cannot show how churn changes with tenure.
  • Requires clean separation of downgrade from cancellation, which many billing systems blur.

Risk & accuracy notice. Churn measured over one short period on a small base is noisy and can invite an overreaction. Establish a trend across several periods before restructuring pricing, packaging or the customer-success organisation on the strength of a single reading.

Practical Use Cases

Reporting churn to a board without misleading them

Present logo churn, gross revenue churn and net revenue churn together. Any one alone can be made to tell a flattering story.

Diagnosing where churn is concentrated

If departures are far below average size, the problem is usually onboarding or fit at the small end. Test the value impact with the Lifetime Value Calculator.

Setting a realistic sales quota

You must replace 516 customers a year on these numbers before growing by a single logo. Quota set without reference to churn is quota set against the wrong target.

Modelling the retention side of the same movement

Churn and retention are complements measured on the same data. Read the other half with the Retention Rate Calculator.

Methodology & Editorial Standards

Churn is measured here on the opening base of the period, which is the standard convention and avoids the distortion created by including customers acquired mid-period who have had little opportunity to leave. The engine reports customer churn and revenue churn separately because they answer different questions and routinely diverge: customer or logo churn counts accounts, while revenue churn weights each departure by what it was worth. Annualisation compounds the monthly survival rate rather than multiplying the monthly loss by twelve, because a churned customer is no longer in the base and cannot churn again; at typical rates the naive multiplication overstates annual churn by several percentage points and the error grows with the rate. Net revenue churn nets expansion and downgrade movement against cancellations and can be negative, which is the defining characteristic of a business whose existing base grows without new sales. Benchmarks verified for 2026 place median monthly customer churn at approximately 3.5%, with under 1% monthly considered good and enterprise books typically running 1% to 2%; roughly 30% of customers who will cancel do so within the first three months, so blended rates conceal a strong duration effect. This engine treats a single period in isolation and does not perform cohort analysis, which is the correct tool for separating onboarding failure from long-run attrition. The engine implements the standard published formula for this calculation. Inputs are validated for domain and sign before evaluation, and any undefined case returns an em-dash rather than a spurious value.

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

Churn Rate Calculator — 20 Expert FAQs

20 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.

How do I calculate monthly churn rate?

Divide customers lost during the period by the customers you had at the start. Use the opening base, never the closing base and never a mid-period average.

Why can I not just multiply monthly churn by twelve?

Because a customer who has already left cannot leave again. Compounding gives 34.53% a year here while the naive multiplication reports 41.61% — an overstatement of 7.09 points.

What is the difference between logo churn and revenue churn?

Logo churn counts accounts; revenue churn weights each departure by what it was worth. They diverge whenever the accounts leaving are not average sized.

What does it mean if logo churn is higher than revenue churn?

You are losing your smaller accounts. Here departures average $223.26 against a $310.00 book average — 72.02% of typical size, usually an onboarding or fit problem at the small end.

What if revenue churn is higher than logo churn?

That is the dangerous inversion — large accounts are leaving, concentration among survivors is rising, and a single further departure can move an entire quarter.

What is negative churn?

When expansion from existing customers exceeds all revenue lost to cancellations and downgrades. Net revenue churn goes below zero and the base grows without new sales.

What is a good churn rate for SaaS?

Median monthly customer churn is around 3.5%. Under 1% monthly is strong, and enterprise books typically run 1% to 2%.

When do most customers churn?

Early. Roughly 30% of customers who cancel do so within the first three months, which is why blended rates hide a strong duration effect and cohort analysis matters.

Should I measure churn monthly or annually?

Monthly for operational management, annually for board reporting — but always annualise by compounding rather than multiplying.

How many customers must I win to stand still?

On these numbers, 43 a month or 516 a year purely to hold the base flat. Quota set without reference to churn is set against the wrong target.

What is the half-life of a customer base?

The time until half the current customers have gone absent new sales. At 3.47% monthly churn that is 19.6 months.

Does churn include downgrades?

Not in logo churn, which counts only complete departures. Downgrades appear as contraction in net revenue churn, which is why both measures are needed.

How do I reduce churn?

Onboarding is usually the highest-leverage intervention given how early churn concentrates. Investment there reportedly halves churn in many published cases.

Is churn on a small base reliable?

No. A handful of accounts can swing the rate by a full point, so establish a trend across several periods before acting on a single reading.

Should involuntary churn be counted separately?

Ideally yes. Failed payments are a recoverable operational problem, whereas deliberate cancellation is a product or value problem, and mixing them obscures both.

How does churn affect valuation?

Directly and heavily, because lifetime value is proportional to 1 divided by churn. A point of churn removed is worth more than a point of growth added in most SaaS valuations.

Is this churn rate calculator free to use?

Yes. It is free, requires no account, and has no usage limits. ApexConverter is funded by contextual advertising, never by selling user data.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The engine runs as Vanilla JavaScript inside your browser under our Zero-Server Client-Side Execution model. Your figures are computed locally and are never transmitted, logged, or stored.

How accurate is this calculator?

It applies the standard closed-form formula in IEEE-754 double precision, rounding only at the display layer. The engine is reconciled against an independent reference implementation before release.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The interface is mobile-first with numeric keypad hints and is tested down to a 320-pixel viewport with no horizontal scrolling.
