Results are clamped to 25–75, because extrapolating outside the table produces absurdities.

A 45-year-old man with a measured VO2max of 48 ml/kg/min: the FRIEND median for 45-year-old men is 42, and 48 is exactly the median for 25-year-old men, so his fitness age is 25 — twenty years below his actual age. The same man at 42 would read exactly 45, and at 39, midway between the 45 and 55 medians, he would read 50. Push the input to 54 and the answer stays pinned at 25 with a clamp warning, because the table has no younger cohort. An earlier version of this model extrapolated the ten-per-cent-per-decade decline instead of interpolating the table, and returned a fitness age of 12 for that same 54 ml/kg/min result. That is why the clamp exists.

Fitness age is derived by locating the user's VO2max on a table of population medians by age and sex and reading off the corresponding age, interpolating linearly between cohorts. The table used is the FRIEND registry — the Fitness Registry and the Importance of Exercise National Database, published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings — because it is built on measured cardiopulmonary exercise tests rather than questionnaires or submaximal predictions, and because independent sources reproduce its figures identically. Published VO2max norms differ widely between sources, with the average for men in their twenties quoted anywhere from about 42.5 to 54 ml/kg/min, so the choice of table is the single largest determinant of the answer and is stated openly. Results are clamped to the range the table covers, ages 25 to 75, and the clamp is reported to the user; an earlier iteration of this model extrapolated a ten-per-cent-per-decade decline slope instead and returned a fitness age of 12 for a fit 45-year-old, which is exactly the failure mode the clamp prevents. Where no VO2max is supplied, the optional heart-rate estimate uses the Uth–Sørensen ratio of 15.3 times maximum over resting heart rate, flagged as a rough non-exercise approximation. The tool states throughout that fitness age is a presentational rescaling of one variable and carries no clinical standing, matching the position taken on the metabolic age calculator.
Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

How can I lower my fitness age
By raising your VO2max, which is the only input. The evidence favours a large base of easy aerobic work plus a modest amount of genuinely hard interval training, typically three to six minutes per interval at an effort you could not sustain much longer. An untrained person might gain five to fifteen per cent over a few months; a trained one will gain far less. There is no shortcut, and a sudden ten-year drop means your estimate changed, not your fitness.
Why do different fitness age calculators give different results
Because they use different VO2max norm tables, and those tables disagree substantially. For men aged 20 to 29 the published “average” VO2max ranges from about 42.5 to 54 ml/kg/min depending on the source, which is enough to shift a fitness age by well over a decade. They may also estimate VO2max differently. Pick one calculator and track it consistently rather than comparing across tools.
Can my fitness age be lower than 25 or higher than 75
This tool clamps at both ends and says so. The reference table covers ages 25 to 75, and beyond those bounds there is nothing to interpolate against. Calculators that extrapolate instead produce nonsense: an earlier version of this model told a fit 45-year-old man his fitness age was 12. If your result is clamped, the honest reading is that your capacity is at or beyond the end of the reference range.
Do I need a lab test to use this
No, but the quality of the answer follows the quality of the VO2max. A laboratory test with gas analysis is the reference standard. A Cooper twelve-minute run test is a good field alternative. Race results give reasonable estimates. Watch estimates are models based on heart rate and pace and can be several points out. The heart-rate option here, 15.3 times maximum over resting, is convenient and distinctly rough.
Is fitness age the same as metabolic age
No. Metabolic age compares your resting metabolic rate against age norms and is driven mostly by lean body mass. Fitness age compares your VO2max against age norms and is driven by cardiorespiratory capacity. They can point in opposite directions: a heavily muscled lifter may have a young metabolic age and an unremarkable fitness age. Both are presentational rescalings without clinical standing.
Does fitness age account for strength or body composition
No, and this is its main blind spot. It reflects aerobic capacity alone. Strength, muscle mass, bone density, blood pressure, blood lipids, glucose control, sleep and diet all matter to health outcomes and none of them appear here. Two people with the same fitness age can be in very different health. Use it as one input alongside actual clinical markers, not as a substitute for them.
How quickly does VO2max decline with age
In sedentary people, roughly ten per cent per decade after the age of twenty-five to thirty. Regular aerobic training approximately halves that rate, which is the practical argument for maintaining endurance work through middle age. The decline comes from falling maximum heart rate, reduced stroke volume and loss of muscle mass. Training cannot stop it, but it can push the whole curve up and flatten it substantially.
