Two names for the same profit measured against two different denominators. Markup divides by cost; margin divides by price. Margin is always the smaller number.

Worked Example

  1. Apply the markup. $42.50 × 1.65 = $70.13.
  2. Find the profit. $70.13 − $42.50 = $27.63 per unit.
  3. Measure it against price. $27.63 ÷ $70.13 = 39.39% margin — not 65%.
  4. Invert for the target. A 40% margin needs 40 ÷ 60 = 66.67% markup, pricing at $70.83.
  5. Check the volume effect. The $0.70 gap per unit is $705.36 across a thousand units.

Analyst's note. This is the most consequential arithmetic error in small business, and it is systematically biased in one direction: it always overstates profitability. A retailer applying a 30% markup while believing they earn a 30% margin is actually earning 23.08%, and on a thousand units that is $5,464.29 of profit that was never there. The relationship is fixed — margin equals markup divided by one plus markup — so a 50% margin always requires a 100% markup, and the divergence grows as the numbers rise. Any business quoting percentages internally should state explicitly which of the two it means.

Methodology & Editorial Standards

Markup is expressed as a percentage of unit cost and margin as a percentage of selling price, which are the standard definitions in retail and wholesale. The engine converts between them using the exact identities rather than approximations. Unit cost should be the fully loaded landed cost — purchase price plus freight, duty and any per-unit handling — since omitting these is the second commonest source of margin error after the markup-margin confusion itself. Break-even divides fixed costs by unit contribution and assumes both cost and price hold constant across the volume, which ignores quantity discounts on inputs and any price elasticity in demand. Payment processing fees, returns and shrinkage are not modelled and all reduce realised margin. The engine implements the standard published formula for this calculation. Inputs are validated for domain and sign before evaluation, and any undefined case returns an em-dash rather than a spurious value.

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

What is the difference between markup and margin?

What is a typical retail markup?

Keystone pricing — a 100% markup, doubling cost — is traditional in general retail and gives a 50% margin. Grocery runs far thinner, jewellery and fashion considerably higher. Industry norms vary too widely to generalise safely.

What should I include in unit cost?

Everything that scales with the unit: purchase price, freight, duty, packaging and per-unit handling. Omitting landed costs is the second commonest margin error after confusing markup with margin.

How do I calculate break-even?

Divide fixed costs by the contribution per unit. At $27.63 of contribution and $8,500 of fixed costs, you need 308 units before the business makes any profit at all.

What is contribution margin?

Price less variable cost — $27.63 here — the amount each sale contributes toward fixed costs and then profit. It is the single most useful number for deciding whether an additional sale is worth making.

Does a discount destroy my margin?

Disproportionately, yes. A 20% discount on a 39.39% margin cuts it to 24.24%, because the discount comes entirely out of profit while cost stays fixed. Always check the resulting margin before agreeing a promotion.

How do payment fees affect margin?

Card processing of 2-3% comes straight off margin, not off markup. On a 39.39% margin a 2.9% fee removes roughly two points, which matters greatly in low-margin categories.

Should margin be the same across all products?

Rarely. Fast-moving lines can carry lower margins because volume covers fixed costs, while slow-moving or specialised items need more. What matters is the blended margin across the mix.

What is gross margin versus net margin?

Gross margin is price less direct cost, which is what this engine computes. Net margin additionally deducts overheads, marketing and tax, and is invariably much lower — a healthy gross margin can still produce a loss.

How do I raise margin without raising prices?

Reduce landed cost through better sourcing or larger orders, cut shrinkage and returns, or shift the sales mix toward higher-margin lines. Each is usually more achievable than a price rise customers will notice.

Can markup exceed 100%?

Easily, and it must for any margin above 50%. A 185.7% markup is required for a 65% margin. There is no upper limit on markup, whereas margin can never reach 100% unless the product is free.
