- Take the oven figures from the recipe. Temperature and total cooking time as written.
- Check what oven the recipe assumes. A fan-oven recipe needs only half the correction.

A recipe calling for 30 minutes at 400°F in a conventional oven becomes 375°F for about 24 minutes in an air fryer, checked from 18 minutes. If that same recipe were written for a fan oven, the correct conversion is 388°F for about 27 minutes, because half the adjustment is already built in. Frozen breaded food would stay at 400°F and take about 20 minutes.

The temperature term is deliberately additive rather than proportional: a percentage of a temperature is undefined on any scale without a true zero, and Fahrenheit and Celsius both have arbitrary zeros, so the widely circulated “reduce by 20%” rule yields different answers depending on which scale it is applied in — 320°F in Fahrenheit against 326°F via Celsius for the same 400°F input, and an absurd 228°F if evaluated on the kelvin scale where the operation is actually defined.
