Handling costs 124 × 11.50 = 1,426.00. With 72% resellable, 34.72 units at 35.80 are written off: 1,243.02. Total 2,669.02, or 1.2268 per unit shipped — and that per-unit figure is what belongs in contribution margin, because you cannot know in advance which units will come back.

The return rate is computed on units shipped and separately per order, since the two diverge as soon as baskets are multi-item and they serve different decisions. Cost is built as carriage plus restocking on every return, plus the full cost of goods on the share that cannot be resold. Outbound shipping is deliberately EXCLUDED here because it belongs to the refund calculation, and counting it in both places would double the loss. The total is expressed per unit shipped, which is the form a contribution margin allowance requires.
Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

How do you calculate return rate?
Divide units returned by units shipped over the same period. Be aware that returns lag shipments by weeks, so in a growing business a period-based rate understates the true cohort rate — you are dividing this month's returns by this month's larger shipment volume.
Should I measure returns per unit or per order?
Both, for different purposes. The unit rate reflects product quality and fit; the order rate reflects how many parcels your warehouse must process. They diverge as soon as baskets contain more than one item, so a single figure is ambiguous.
What is the difference between a return and a refund?
A return is goods coming back; a refund is money going out. They frequently accompany each other but need not — a digital refund involves no return, and a return subject to a restocking fee is not a full refund. Measure them separately.
Why does the write-off often exceed the handling cost?
Because a unit that cannot be resold at full price loses its entire cost of goods, while handling is a fixed few dollars. In apparel and anything where condition or packaging matters, the write-off dominates and resale recovery is the lever worth pulling.
Should the returns allowance be in contribution margin?
Yes, spread across every unit shipped rather than charged to the returned ones. You cannot know in advance which units come back, so the expected cost is carried by all of them — exactly like an insurance premium.
Do free returns pay for themselves?
Sometimes. They reliably lift conversion and reliably lift return rates, so the question is whether the additional orders outweigh the additional cost. It is a measurement rather than a principle, and the answer differs sharply by category.
Can I charge a restocking fee?
It depends on your jurisdiction and how clearly you disclose it, and several places restrict or prohibit the practice. Even where legal, restocking fees depress conversion measurably, so the recovery is not free — model the lost orders before assuming a net gain.
Why do apparel return rates run so high?
Fit uncertainty, and the deliberate practice of ordering multiple sizes intending to keep one. Better size guidance and fit tools attack the cause; return-policy changes only attack the symptom and cost conversion doing it.
How do returns affect advertising economics?
Directly, because a returned order consumed acquisition cost and produced no revenue. Your contribution margin must be net of expected returns, otherwise your break-even ROAS is too low and you will systematically overpay for traffic.
Should returned units be counted as inventory again?
Only the resellable share, and at their realistic resale value rather than original cost. Booking an opened return back into stock at full value overstates both inventory and margin, and the discrepancy surfaces later as shrinkage.
