Formula
The MET value is a multiple of resting metabolism. Subtracting 1 gives the NET cost — the energy the exercise added over and above simply existing for the same period, which is the figure that matters for energy balance.

Energy is estimated with the standard MET relationship, kcal = MET × 3.5 × body mass in kg ÷ 200 × minutes, using elliptical trainer values from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities: approximately 4.6 for light general use, 5.0 for moderate, 7.0 for vigorous and 8.5 for very vigorous effort. Both gross and net figures are reported, net subtracting one MET so that the resting metabolism the user would have spent anyway is excluded. The console-error figures are from published validation work: a widely reported study found elliptical trainers the least accurate machine class at around 42% overstatement, the American Council on Exercise reports a 20 to 30% range, a 2018 study measured up to 130 kcal of overstatement per 30-minute session, and a 2015 comparison of two machines from one manufacturer found errors of −2.7% and +24.7% on identical protocols.
