What this result does not account for

  • A single multiple cannot capture growth, quality or concentration differences.
  • Assumes net debt is accurately stated and excludes off-balance-sheet obligations.
  • Arbitrage assumes the group multiple survives acquisitive growth, which is not automatic.

In short: EBITDA of $468,000 at 6.50× gives an enterprise value of $3,042,000. After $1,720,000 of net debt the equity is $1,322,000 — an equity multiple of just 2.82×, because leverage absorbs 56.54% of enterprise value.

Formula

Enterprise value = EBITDA × Multiple
Equity value = EV − Net debt
Equity multiple = Equity value ÷ EBITDA
Arbitrage = Bolt-on EBITDA × (Group multiple − Purchase multiple)

The quoted multiple values the business. The equity multiple values what the owner receives, and leverage is the entire difference.

Worked Example

  1. Apply the multiple. $468,000 of EBITDA at 6.50× gives an enterprise value of $3,042,000.
  2. Settle the net debt. $1,900,000 of debt less $180,000 of cash is $1,720,000, leaving $1,322,000 of equity.
  3. Find the equity multiple. $1,322,000 on $468,000 of EBITDA is 2.82× — far below the 6.50× headline.
  4. Measure the gearing effect. A half turn is 7.69% of enterprise value but 17.70% of equity, an amplification of 2.30 times.
  5. Model the deleveraging. Three years at $150,000 lifts equity to $1,772,000, up 34.04% with no EBITDA growth at all.

The gap between the enterprise multiple and the equity multiple is the most consequential thing on this page. A seller told their business is worth 6.50 times EBITDA hears a number that describes the whole enterprise, but what reaches them is 2.82 times, because net debt absorbs 56.54% of the value first. The same arithmetic run forwards is why deleveraging is so powerful: three years of routine debt repayment lifts equity by 34.04% without EBITDA moving at all, since every dollar repaid converts to equity at par while enterprise value stays put. Sponsors understand this and prioritise cash generation accordingly; owner-managers frequently do not, and focus on growth that a stretched balance sheet then captures for the lenders.

Strengths & Limits Of This Model

Where this engine is strong

  • Reports the equity multiple alongside the enterprise multiple, which is rarely quoted.
  • Quantifies the gearing amplification on any movement in the multiple.
  • Models deleveraging and bolt-on arbitrage, both absent from general valuation tools.

Where it stops

  • Cannot value loss-making businesses; states this rather than producing a meaningless figure.
  • Does not adjust EBITDA for normalisation or one-off items.

Risk & accuracy notice. A seller who hears a 6.50× multiple and plans around it will be surprised by what reaches them. Net debt is settled first, and on a geared balance sheet it can absorb the majority of enterprise value before any proceeds reach shareholders.

Practical Use Cases

Understanding what a quoted multiple means for you

The equity multiple is what matters. Cross-check the full bridge with the Business Valuation Calculator.

Evaluating a bolt-on acquisition

Buying at 4.00× into a group valued at 6.50× creates $300,000 on day one, a 62.50% return before synergies.

Planning an exit

Deleveraging before sale converts debt repayment into equity at par. Three years here is worth 34.04%.

Testing sensitivity to the multiple

Each half turn is $234,000, amplified 2.30 times at the equity line. Check the earnings basis with the EBITDA Margin Calculator.

Methodology & Editorial Standards

The EV/EBITDA multiple is the standard basis for valuing established profitable businesses because it is independent of capital structure and of the depreciation policy applied to the asset base, which makes it comparable across companies financed and depreciated differently. The engine applies the multiple to produce enterprise value, then deducts net debt to give the equity value, and expresses that equity value back over EBITDA as an equity multiple — a figure rarely quoted and considerably more relevant to an owner than the headline. Because debt is fixed in amount, movements in enterprise value fall entirely on the equity, so the engine quantifies the amplification factor that gearing applies to any change in the multiple. Two further mechanisms are modelled that the general valuation page does not cover. Deleveraging holds both EBITDA and the multiple constant while repaying debt, demonstrating that every dollar repaid converts to equity at par. Multiple arbitrage prices a bolt-on acquisition bought at a lower multiple than the acquiring group commands, which creates value on completion before any synergy is assumed and is the entire economic basis of buy-and-build strategies — with the standing caveat that the group multiple must actually survive growth by acquisition. The engine implements the standard published formula for this calculation. Inputs are validated for domain and sign before evaluation, and any undefined case returns an em-dash rather than a spurious value.

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

EBITDA Multiple Calculator — 20 Expert FAQs

20 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.

What is an EBITDA multiple?

Enterprise value divided by EBITDA. Here 6.50× on $468,000 gives $3,042,000.

Why use EBITDA rather than profit?

Because it is independent of capital structure and depreciation policy, making businesses comparable regardless of how they are financed.

What is the equity multiple?

Equity value over EBITDA — 2.82× here against a 6.50× enterprise multiple. It is what the owner actually receives.

Why is the equity multiple so much lower?

Because net debt of $1,720,000 absorbs 56.54% of enterprise value before shareholders see anything.

What is a good EBITDA multiple?

Entirely sector and size dependent. Small businesses trade at 3–6×, mid-market 6–10×, and quality software far higher.

How does leverage amplify the multiple?

Debt is fixed, so all movement lands on equity. A half turn is 7.69% of EV but 17.70% of equity here.

Does deleveraging create value?

Yes, at par. Three years of $150,000 repayments lifts equity 34.04% with no EBITDA growth whatsoever.

What is multiple arbitrage?

Buying EBITDA at a lower multiple than your own. $120,000 bought at 4.00× is worth 6.50× inside the group — $300,000 created.

Is arbitrage real value or an accounting effect?

Real, provided the group multiple holds. The risk is that acquisitive growth is rated lower than organic growth.

Why do smaller businesses trade at lower multiples?

Key person risk, customer concentration, thinner management and a smaller buyer pool. The discount is structural, not a mispricing.

What leverage is too much?

Above three times EBITDA most lenders treat the structure as fully drawn and refinancing risk dominates any transaction.

Should cash be deducted from debt?

Yes, net debt is the correct measure, though buyers often argue some cash is operationally required and cannot be swept.

How does this differ from an SDE multiple?

SDE adds back owner compensation and carries lower multiples. Never apply one basis with the other's multiple.

What moves the multiple most?

Growth, recurring revenue, customer concentration and management depth. Size alone moves it substantially.

Can the equity value be negative?

Yes, if net debt exceeds enterprise value. The business still has worth but the shareholders do not, and the engine says so.

Is EBITDA a proxy for cash flow?

A poor one. It ignores working capital, capital expenditure and tax, all of which consume real cash before shareholders see any.

Is this ebitda multiple calculator free to use?

Yes. It is free, requires no account, and has no usage limits. ApexConverter is funded by contextual advertising, never by selling user data.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The engine runs as Vanilla JavaScript inside your browser under our Zero-Server Client-Side Execution model. Your figures are computed locally and are never transmitted, logged, or stored.

How accurate is this calculator?

It applies the standard closed-form formula in IEEE-754 double precision, rounding only at the display layer. The engine is reconciled against an independent reference implementation before release.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The interface is mobile-first with numeric keypad hints and is tested down to a 320-pixel viewport with no horizontal scrolling.
