Worked Example

  1. Set the rate. A factor of 2.0 over a five-year life is 40.00%, applied to the opening book value rather than to the depreciable base.
  2. Charge year one. 40.00% of $540,000 is $216,000 — 2.25 times the $96,000 straight line charge, on an identical asset.
  3. Apply to a shrinking balance. Year two takes 40.00% of $324,000, or $129,600. The charge falls every year because the base it applies to falls.
  4. Guard the terminal years. The charge is floored so book value never drops below $60,000 salvage, and switches to straight line once that yields more.
  5. Compare the totals. $480,000 written off, exactly as under straight line. Only the distribution across years differs.

Double declining balance needs two guards or it fails, and the reasons are different. The salvage floor prevents writing off value the business expects to recover on disposal. The switch to straight line solves a more fundamental problem: a fixed percentage of a shrinking balance never reaches zero, so without switching, the asset would still carry residual book value at the end of its life and the remaining balance would have to be written off in a single lump. Accounting standards require the switch precisely to avoid that discontinuity, and disabling it here shows the effect — the schedule leans entirely on the salvage floor to terminate, which produces a cliff rather than a taper.
